Tips About Vaccination Guidelines To Remember:

  • Children who don’t begin vaccines until age 7 have aged-out of needing all of the DTaP, HIB and Hep B series of vaccines, so the number of required vaccines will be less.
  • Unvaccinated children who are entering school at age 7 or older don’t need to catch up on most of their missing shots.

About Spacing Out Vaccines In Infants and Children

  • The spacing between any of these vaccines should be prolonged to at least one month, to reduce vaccine injury potential.
  • The vaccination process takes about one year to complete with one vaccine given each time.
  • The schedule may be started at any age in preparation for daycare or preschool.
  • If a child already had some vaccines during infancy, but then the process was stopped, parents do NOT need to repeat any previously given vaccines. They begin the schedule with whatever is left.

Conditional Entry For California Schools

In California, parents who need to register for daycare or preschool can begin school with a “conditional entry”.  This means  that these children don’t need to wait until all doses are complete before they enter school.

Vaccination Requirements For Daycare Or Preschool

  • 3 Polio
  • 4 DTaP as follows:
    • 4 weeks between  #1 and #2
    • 6 month between #2 and #3
    • 6 month between # 3 and #4
  • 3 Hepatitis B
  • 1 HIB*
  • 1 MMR
  • 1 Varicella (if had disease can be waive if confirmed by MD)

*Note: Only 1 HIB is needed for infants 15 months and older.
Also note: A 5th dose of DTaP and a 4th dose of Polio aren’t needed as long as the last doses of each are given at 4 years of age and older.

Vaccination Requirement For Kindergarten  Age 4-6

  • 4 Polio (3 is allowed if one is given on or after 4th birthday)
  • 5 DTaP (4 is allowed  if one is given on or after 4th birthday)
  • 3 Hepatitis B
  • *2 MMR (on or after 1st birthday)
  • *2 Varicella (if had disease can be waive if confirmed by MD)

*Note: California schools currently allow for titers for certain vaccines. For kindergarten admission, 2 doses of MMR and 2 doses of Chickenpox are required. For most children, 1 dose may be enough to raise titers. Families who are trying to minimize the number of vaccines can get a blood titers test a few months after the first doses of each, at the same time. If titers are high enough, the second doses wouldn’t be needed. If the blood test shows the first dose failed to produce titers, the second doses need to be given.

Vaccination Requirements For K – 12

  • 4 Polio (3 is allowed if one is given on or after 4th birthday)
  • 5 DTap/Tdap* (4 is allowed if one was given on or after 4th birthday)
  • 3 Hepatitis B (3 doses required only if kindergarten is skipped)
  • 2 Varicella (if had disease can be waive if confirmed by MD)
  • 2 MMR

*Note: Kids 7 years and older can’t get DTaP, and they can’t get a series of Tdap. Tdap is only approved as a single dose once a child turns 7 years.

Vaccination  Requirements For 7th Grade – 12th

  • 4 Polio (3 is allowed if one is given on or after 4th birthday)
  • 4 DTaP + 1 Tdap (Tdap is given on or after 7th birthday)
  • 2 MMR
  • 3 Hepatitis B
  • 1 Varicella OR 2 Varicella –  if immunized on or after 13th birthday (titers or disease can waive vaccine with MD)

Vaccination  Requirements For 7th Grade Advancement (age 12 or older in ungraded school)
